The Benefits of Chiropractic Care On The Nervous System

Updated: Jul 15

At StayWell Chiropractic, we understand the importance of how our nervous system functions. Chiropractic adjustments using different adjustment techniques can improve the efficiency of signals traveling through the nervous system. Chiropractic care and nervous system disorders are two of the most common reasons people see chiropractors.

Chiropractic care can treat a wide range of nervous system disorders, including headaches, back pain, and neck pain. It also promotes overall wellness through adjustments to the spine and musculoskeletal system.

Low back pain is the second most common reason people seek chiropractic care in the United States. Nervous system disorders can be extremely debilitating, so seeing a chiropractor is an important step toward healing.

What is the Nervous System and How Does It Work?

The nervous system is a collection of cells and nerves that are responsible for sending and receiving signals within the body.

It coordinates many processes, including movement, digestion, sleep, and hormone production. The parts of the nervous system include the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The brain receives information from the senses and uses it to decide what to do next.

The spinal cord connects the brain with the rest of the body. The nerves carry messages between the brain and other parts of the body.

The nervous system consists of several parts:

  • Neurons (nerve cells), which are specialized cells that transmit nerve impulses

  • Peripheral nervous system (PNS), which consists of nerves carrying impulses away from the central nervous system

  • Central nervous system (CNS), consisting of brain and spinal cord

  • Sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which is part of the PNS

  • Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which is part of SNS

  • Peripheral autonomic nervous system (PAN), which consists of nerves outside CNS

  • Visceral autonomic nervous system (VAN), which includes organs such as heart, lungs, intestines, stomach, etc.

  • Sympathetic division or preganglionic neurons, which carry impulses from SNS to CNS

  • Parasympathetic division or postganglionic neurons, which carry impulses from CNS to SNS

The nervous system is very complex and there are still things we’re still learning today about its complexity.

What is chiropractic care?

It is a common misconception that chiropractors only adjust the spine to relieve back pain. But they also correct issues that focus on our musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, bones) can be treated, diagnosed, or prevented by chiropractors.

As a result, these adjustments can positively impact the function of the nervous system. Chiropractic care can alleviate the patient's pain and positively impact their nervous system health if a chiropractor diagnoses and treats a pinched or damaged nerve.

Chiropractic clinics tend to treat back and neck problems as well as a wide variety of other health problems that patients may be experiencing. This includes giving advice to patients on topics such as nutrition, exercise and ways to improve mental well-being.

Chiropractic Improves Nervous System Health

Chiropractic care helps to improve nervous system health by reducing stress and anxiety, improving circulation, and reducing pain. Because of this, it can also help to relieve back pain and other conditions that are related to poor nervous system health.

Chiropractors believe that the body's nervous system is like an electrical grid; when it is disrupted, it can cause disease. By helping to realign the nervous system, chiropractic care can help to restore balance and improve overall health.

If you focus on improving circulation in the body, chiropractic care can make it easier for nutrients to reach muscles and tissues, which can improve overall health. By reducing stress and anxiety, chiropractic care can help reduce inflammation in the body, which could help prevent disease.

By increasing flexibility in the spine and surrounding joints, chiropractic care can help improve posture and alignment, which can improve overall health.

If you reduce pain caused by poor nervous system health, chiropractic care can help improve the quality of life for people with diseases such as back pain and joint pain.
